Soundscape #132: “And… One More Thing”

August 7th, 2009

There is much to admire about public speakers or at least people who aren’t afraid to address a crowd. Besides delivering the content, the speaker has to also be at ease throughout. It’s a big feat, that’s for sure. Facing a roomful of expectant faces is unnerving and disconcerting.

There’s no shortage of advice out there for people who need to speak publicly. “Imagine them naked” says one, or “move your eyes from one face to the next”, “smile” etc. I think the most useful one is actually “practice, practice, practice.” I read somewhere that Steve Jobs spent days and days practicing his speech, perfecting even the pauses and dramatic flick of his remote.

That somehow made me feel better. Sure, he is Steve Jobs but he still has to memorise his lines and perfect his routine like the rest of us mere mortals.
