Soundscape #116: “Everything Must Go”

January 9th, 2009

It’s amazing the amount of crap one collects involuntarily/unknowingly over time. The other day, I was looking for some book that I know I have and suddenly that search spiralled into a clean-up. I started throwing out some “what is this still doing here?” crap and that became a “where did these books come from?” tidy up and finally a “how come these books aren’t in alphabetical order?” operation.

Roy Lichtenstein. Interior Series: Modern Room, 1990.

It wasn’t pretty.

It got me thinking though: why do we accumulate so much stuff? From books to cds, clothes and things and stuff. Just the little bits and pieces that just one day decide to overflow. Most of it was bought, I guess. At that point in time I probably couldn’t not buy it, and thought that my life would finally be complete. I happily handed over the money and brought it home, only to have it (whatever it is) languish in a corner of my room, waiting in ambush for that one day I would cast my eyes upon it and wonder what had possessed me to think that that is the answer to my life.
