Soundscape #114: “The Answer Must Be In The Attempt”

When we were younger, friends were everywhere, especially in school. We all have more or less the same outlook on life (to get out of school in one piece). Those were the times, weren’t they? There was so much to talk about and so much to do. It seemed almost impossible to be bored. But as we age and obligations make more and more exorbitant demands on our time, our days of insouciance seemed to have hollowed out.

I used to think that a connection between 2 strangers is possible as long as both parties are open to it but that’s not the case at all. People have different agendas and motivations and for 2 different individuals to really connect is becoming the stuff of miracles. More often than not, our minds play tricks on us: if we really think about the specific qualities that endeared others to us, they could have been really small and insignificant, but inflated out of proportion. At the end of the day, the mind believes what it wants to believe and that, my friends, is the danger.

But all human beings share the same yearning to connect with someone, whether it’s someone special or a shopping buddy and that connection is a beautiful one to behold and may well worth the thousands of misconnections and miscommunications that fraught our lives.
