Soundscape #113: “I Am A Part Of All That I Have Met” – Lord Alfred Tennyson

There are certain stages everyone goes through when they encounter a bad crisis of some kind. First, there’s denial, anger, the questioning, the grieving and finally, if you are lucky, acceptance. The hardest part is of course the acceptance. Before getting there, there will be several cycles of anger and sadness to go through. Sometimes you surprise yourself with the depths that a human being is able to plunge. I guess one has to fall off the wagon before one can see exactly where the wagon is heading.

For me, it’s the what-ifs that get me all the time. “What if I could get the time back? What if I had done this instead of that blah blah etc etc?” Even when you think you’re alright, it still slips in unnoticed from time to time and surprise you with its intensity. We tend to regret what we didn’t do; we all like to think that we would have done something different. But given the same set of circumstances, more often than not, it’s hard not to let your instincts take over.

More importantly, when we try and black out whatever hurt there is, that’s a part of ourselves that we are obliterating, whether we know it or not. I’d like to believe that we are who we are because of the people we have met and the experiences we have had. And it’s a process that is forever open for as long as we are alive.
