Soundscape #110: “If You Let Them Kill You, They Will” – Charles Bukowski

November 28th, 2008

Humans are funny things. We all trudge along as best (or worse, depending on what you want) we can, all thinking that we are somehow truly unique in the world. If we look up at a flock of birds and struggle to differentiate one from another, isn’t the reverse true of us as well? Of course that is not a fair statement to make. After all, there are many things that distinguish us from animals.

I want to say that we have an indomitable spirit but that’s not always the case either, is it? It all depends. For every “optimistic” saying, we are sure to have a direct opposite equivalent. Carpe Diem, they say but also “Let it be.” I wouldn’t blame a poor sod for being confused. When do we fight and when do we let go?

For me, I’d rather go down fighting than to surrender without a fight. One of the worst feelings ever is regret that you didn’t do enough. Now to repeat that to myself until it sticks…
