Soundscape #109: “Just Cos You Got The Monkey Off Your Back Doesn’t Mean The Circus Has Left Town” – George Carlin
November 21st, 2008The ancient philosopher, Epicurus, posited that “the purpose of philosophy is to attain the happy, tranquil life characterised by the absence of pain and fear, and by living a self-sufficient life surrounded by friends.”

The word “self-sufficient” is particularly interesting to me. It’s hard to find someone who is “self-sufficient” in this day and age, no? The clichés of globalisation aside, the stresses of modern life seem to bear down upon us with an intensity that, just, well, doesn’t seem natural. When the world around us seems to change at an increasing rate, it makes sense to hold on to something constant. I guess that’s why so many people turn to drugs and drinks and smoking. Or even food and tv. If you think about it, any kind of excess can tip over to a form of addiction.
