Soundscape #106: “Press 1 For English”
October 31st, 2008We have all cursed and swore at this before: clutching the phone and stabbing at “0″ in an attempt to get to a live human to bitch about our phone bills, credit cards, cable, you name it. And lots of people must have been doing the same thing too since now, more often than not, after we push the “0″ on the keypad to bypass the automated recordings, we get a “Sorry, that is an invalid action… Press “pound” to return to menu.”

Call centres are, I guess, a necessary evil. The idea behind it is good enough though: extend after-sales service or technical support conveniently to customers. Well, they did say that the way to Hell is paved with good intentions, didn’t they? Not only is the menu overly convoluted and treat us like idiots, automated phone messages seem to innately turn people off. I don’t want machines suggesting that I check their website for answers (that’s totally rubbish when it happened to me, since my problem was not being able to get online in the first place), I want a human!
