Soundscape #105: “You Talkin’ To Me?”
October 24th, 2008I don’t think taxi drivers like me very much. Which is weird cos I’m usually very polite when sitting in a car driven by a stranger. Cab drivers are usually very grumpy, at least when I’m inside the cab. Or they would not know the way and would not ask. We’d be driving round in cycles for a while before I realise we are nowhere near where I want to be.
All these are still ok. I can handle grumpiness and general stupidity. It’s the talking and talking and talking that I can’t. Now, there’s a lot of wisdom to be gleaned from driving on the roads all day. I’d like to think that most cab drivers are rather lonely creatures with no one to talk to. They are a fount of information, that’s for sure. They know how to avoid tolled roads or where the best places are to hail a cab in town, the cheapest and the best foods around. It’s really cool but all that knowledge can go to one’s head. I once had a cab driver who thinks I’m something I’m not and had already decided the kind of person I am, my background and everything else in between simply by the things I was carrying.
It can be dangerous (by dangerous, I mean annoying) when these cab drivers start thinking that they have the experience to size people up in the moment he/she gets in his cab.
