Soundscape #93: Everyone’s Got One
July 25th, 2008Ego, according to the mighty wiki, is a Latin word meaning “I”, cognate with the Greek “Εγώ (Ego)” meaning “I.” And no other species on this planet has a better idea of “I” than us humans. The idea of the ego goes further than Freud’s famous “ego, id and the super-ego.” Psychology aside, it’s just another idea of the self.

So why does ego has a slightly more negative connotation than, say, pride? We say “glowing with pride” but we don’t say “our ego is glowing.” I suppose pride has a more direct relationship with what one does while ego seems to presuppose the notion of what one thinks one does. I’m not about to get into semantics here but I do know that there’s a “bruised ego” is not really something to ignore, especially in an argument. People say things they don’t mean, seemingly to get back at the other party but really, it’s to protect their own little egos.
