June 13th, 2008Once upon a time, in a kingdom far far away, there lived many a knight eager to save the day. Whether it be slaying a dragon or rescuing a princess, knights flock from all over to make their name.

The greatest stories ever told, King Arthur, The Odyssey, even Don Quixote, hark to a time where things are simpler; where there is a clear line between right and wrong, good and evil, love and hate.
The word “chivalry” is derived from the French chevalier, used to describe knightly virtues, honour and courtly love. I suppose it could be analogous to the Japanese bushido or the “Code”. While I wouldn’t mind someone holding the door for me once in a while— if only to stop it from slamming in my face at least— I suppose I could do most of the things guys can too. Except for, say, killing bugs, cockroaches, lizards, fixing the pipes, unclogging toilets of course, you get the drift. I’m not about to open a can of worms by going into gender equality here but it seems to me that being considerate to those around you would more than constitute chivalry, no?
