Soundscape #85: “Against Boredom Even Gods Struggle In Vain” — Friedrich Nietzsche

May 23rd, 2008

They say that only boring people get bored. I don’t think that’s entirely true nor fair. Everyone goes through periods of boredom. Bored with whatever they are doing now, their jobs, their families and friends, their lives (or rather than their lot in life). I think most people would think that boredom is something to be avoided.

Tillnet. Clearout, 2007.

Sometimes it’s easy to get out of the rut by calling up some friends and then going out for drinks or a spot of shopping. But there are times when nothing you do will erase that sense of heaviness, that dread, that restlessness, that waiting-for-something-to-happen. And it can be pretty debilitating too if it drags on long enough. You can be watching TV and you surf the channels just for the sake of it. Hell, you don’t even stay on a channel long enough to know what’s showing. I think this sort of boredom is a little like insomnia: the more you think about how you’re not sleeping, the more likely you’re not going to. The worst thing to do at this moment is to look at the clock, right?
