Soundscape #82: “My Experience In Amsterdam Is That Cyclists Ride Where The Hell They Like” — Terry Pratchett
May 2nd, 2008It’s true: the chances of you being murdered, robbed and raped (or all 3) in Amsterdam are negligible when it comes to them cyclists. Sure, Amsterdam is famous for the red light district, the museums, the dope, but it’s very very possible that you will die under the bicycle wheel before you even get on a tram.
Amsterdamned Café (closed), March 2008.
We call them “silent assassins” and lost count of the number of times we go “hey, watch it!” First, cyclists go everywhere and do not care if they are supposed to be there (on the pedestrian pavement? I think not) or not. Second, they don’t care if they run into anything. They probably think of themselves as fearless cavalry of the light brigade or something. Last, there are so many cyclists in so many directions that you’d probably run right smack into the path of one while trying to avoid another.
