Soundscape #73: God, How The Year Passed! (i.e., AGAIN?)
February 8th, 2008“Tradition” is a powerful word. I guess it keeps entire culture, and hence, civilisation, going. But for me, the power of the word really comes knocking on my door around this time every year. Somehow I have to do things and go places I don’t really give a shit about. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against visiting relatives’ houses, it’s the forced marching that I don’t care for. And sometimes I feel that I have to say “no” just because someone says “yes.”

LondonBrad. New Year, 2007.
But there’s no winning against this tradition. All mothers, I believe, have mastered the art of the guilt trip. One way or the other, you have to suck it up and try not to sulk too much when your relatives exclaim “oh how dark you are! Have you got a boyfriend yet? Why are you not married?” etc etc. It’s quite a trial keeping silent at that point, I can tell you. All I can do, as a sort of revenge, is to sit around the TV and drink as much beer as I can, as quietly as I can.
