Soundscape #72: If the Planets Align

February 1st, 2008

I suppose the Mosaic festival is the Singapore equivalent of the Glastonbury, only indoors with nice plushy seats. This year they are bringing Broken Social Scene, Múm, Harry Connick Jr, Fugiya & Miyagi, The Bird and The Bee and some others that I don’t remember atm. I’m not doubting that the Mosaic people really do want to bring in the best but I guess it’s hard to raise the money to bring in quality acts from the other side of the planet.

It’s quite admirable then, that they are bringing BSS (albeit without Feist) but what about so many other bands? The powers-that-be are always saying that they are worried about bringing in the crowds or they’d say that it would be too expensive. Of course, they are right in their concerns and hence, we have been languishing in a deplorably expensive gig-going culture.

I have only one thing to say: Why not invite bands on their way to Australia’s Big Day Out? Since the aussies have already booked them, why not grab this chance? This year, there are so many bands heading down under: The National, Okkervil River, Sufjan Stevens, Explosions In The Sky*… it’s such an opportunity!

Or! Or! Before you decide to drop in some big ones on bringing most of the 16-17-strong BSS, why not have people vote who they’d like to see most! I like BSS, don’t get me wrong, but I’d rather have 2 of any of the bands featured this week. Just work the numbers!

*It’s funny about EITS: Some enterprising dude is going to bring them to Kuala Lumpur instead and it’s very very likely that the ticket and the coach are going to cost less than if they were to come here.
