Soundscape #71: “People Who Enjoy Meetings Should Not Be In Charge Of Anything” — Thomas Sewell

January 25th, 2008

Sigh. If there were ever an equivalent of a black hole on earth, it would have to be meetings. It would be the single unanimous decision ever. Everyone would agree: 8 or more people sitting around a conference table, tapping away at their laptops while some buried their heads in their notebooks, seemingly taking copious notes, is not the best way of doing things. Even (and some may say, especially with) with a meeting agenda and some poor soul assigned to take minutes (oh god, don’t even get me started on that), the entire universe seems to be sucked into some irrevocable hell. The chair would lead the meeting by asking people what they think, etc, how it would “fit in the workflow,” what implications would doing x bring or how much money the company would save if we do y

Has anyone thought about the amount of time and money the company would save if we are not sitting around a fucking table staring daggers into everyone else!? Why, oh why, are meetings this.fucking.draining?? What is so bad about using emails and the telephone? Everyone says that our world is becoming more alienating everyday because of all the text messages, emails and what-have-yous the kids are into instead of face-to-face interaction…blah blah.. but come on, I’d take that over a senseless meeting any day.

Gosh, couldn’t agree more with ya. Hate meetings. If it were up to me I’d dictate that everyone hold meetings standing up (unless you were handicapped or elderly or had medical reasons.)
