Soundscape #68: “All The Art Of Living Lies In A Fine Mingling Of Letting Go And Holding On” — Havelock Ellis
December 28th, 2007So my hard drive died on me the other day. I was on my usual routine, wake up, roam around the house to get oriented and then turning on the computer to check my mail and listen to some music. I was confused for a while as iTunes kept bugging me to locate the tracks on my PC. Confusion quickly gave way to panic as it soon became clear that my entire digital life has just been wiped out of existence. Everything from music to pictures to documents. I feel ill just typing it out now. And the worse part of it is that I don’t remember what else is inside. What if it becomes a matter of life and death that I locate it later on? It’s a very scary thought.

As I was transferring some of the music back (”all my live music gone!“) and watching iTunes slowly feeding from my ipod, I got a bit scared just thinking about how my digital existence can be wiped out just like that (for what are we if not our music!?). I’m still coming to terms with it (”where the fuck are my holiday pictures!!??) by thinking of the whole experience as a purifying/purging one. …
Moral of the story: Back up whatever you can’t afford to lose.
