Soundscape #50: “Through A Glass, Darkly”

We all see the world through our own tiny little keyholes, shaped by both nature and nurture. There’s no denying that our environment in many ways colours the way we behave and react to it. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, as long as you don’t think that the way you look at the way is the only right way.

I’ve been looking at the world through The Soundscapes Project for about a year now (ok, so I took a 2 week break) and it’s become a filter of-sorts with which to view the world. Every thought or feeling I have suddenly took on a life of its own as a possibility for a soundscape episode. I’d be on the bus and an idea would come to me so fast that I’d struggle to get it all down on a scrap piece of paper, standing up no less, just in case I lose my train of thought. It was difficult in the beginning since I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, other than doing something with music, art/photography and words.

Through this, I’ve learnt that a thought/idea/feeling probably is probably worth that much more to yourself, if not others, if you make the effort to articulate and express it. I like following my train of thought as it takes an idea and runs away with it. I like checking out the stupendously gorgeous photography and art on flickr or art history sites. And of course, let’s not forget the sheer amount of music I’ve both discovered and rediscovered. Songs I’ve never thought I’d listen to again become imbued with new and deeper meanings when filtered through my soundscape lens.So what do you guys think? Tell me what you like and what you don’t.
